Ever since I was a little girl, I've dreamed of straight hair. It used to take my mom two hours to blow dry my hair when I was a kid and I used to hate doing my hair so much that I would pay my sorority sisters in alcohol to blow dry my hair for me. I never turned down a professional blow out, and I've gotten many a straightening & relaxing treatments in my day to just tame the mane that sits a top of my head.

Over the years I've gone through my fair share of hair tools; from blow dry brushes to a failed attempt at using the Dyson Airwrap to finally settling on my Shark FlexStyle...I still felt like something was missing.

I dreamed of a day where I would have a straightener that could take my hair from wet to dry, and wouldn't fry it all off the way the early 2000s Remington Wet 2 Dry Straightener did. It was such a specific ask I wasn't sure if any brand could answer the prayer...until Dyson came calling last year.

The Dyson AirStrait was released in early 2023 and at a whopping $500, I was hesitant it would ever be mine. I watched tutorials, I dreamed about it, I tried to make a savings plan...I was determined.

Lucky me, Black Friday and my birthday are always happening around the same time so as a gift to myself, and by using an Ulta coupon (and getting double points during my birthday month) I bought the Dyson Air Strait and honestly haven't looked back since.

It's taken me a year to write this review, partly because I'm lazy and partly because I really did want to be sure that I loved it as much as I thought I did.

The Dyson Air Strait is a very special tool that not only takes your hair from wet to dry in seconds but it actually comes out pin straight. For a girl who loves a keratin treatment, having that pin straight hair and having it stay that way until the next hair wash day is unheard of...but the magicians at Dyson made it happen.

Just like with other Dyson tools, the Air Strait uses air, not heat, to dry your hair. It has no plates, so there is no frying going on and the temperatures are lower than your average hair iron, sitting at a nice 175°F, 230°F and 285°F.

A feature that I didn't really think about before purchasing but have grown to love is that there is no heat up time. As soon as you turn the iron on, it's ready to be used which makes the process of doing your hair a little less daunting. What also makes it less of a chore is how fast my hair comes dry. It's faster than my Shark, or the Air Wrap and within 20 minutes, my hair is not only dry but completely straight.

The beauty of the Air Strait is the fact that it's an all in one tool; there's no switching between attachments or having to do twice the work to get the same look. Your hair is wet one minute and within 2-3 passes of the Air Strait, it's completely styled.

There are small air holes on the outer edges of the plates so you can use it to rough dry your roots, making for an even straighter and sleeker hair style which I can appreciate.

Another interesting feature is that the technology within the Air Strait can sense when hair is between the 'plates', so it picks up speed and heat; when you remove the hair from the dryer, it becomes slightly more quiet and doesn't blow as much heat. It also automatically turns off after about 30 seconds if it doesn't sense your hair, but as soon as you pick it back up, it whirs back to life. It's so freaking cool and not having to turn the straightener on and off is pretty cool.

You might think that you would still need a regular flat iron to supplement when you're not blow drying your hair and that is false; there is a wet and dry setting on the Air Strait so you can use it when your hair is dry for touchups.

There have been times when even using the Air Strait seems too daunting of a task so I let my hair air dry and decide to straighten it the next day. In the past, when I would do this with a regular straightener, it would take incredibly long and always come out slightly too puffy. It was never as straight or styled as I wanted it; it always ended up being more of a hassle than anything else. That is completely gone when I use the Air Strait; if I use it on dry, un-styled hair, I still get a very straight and beautiful head of hair. Sure, it's not as good as when you use it on wet hair but it's an incredible alternative.

There is one con, though -- there always is because nothing is truly perfect; for me, at least, this doesn't give me any volume. It is a true straightener and because it's also a blowdryer, so it's slightly hard to work with to get volume. If I don't feel like doing a really straight hair style, I'll usually let my hair air dry and then straighten it the next day or use my Shark Flex Style.

I'm sure you could get volume with the Dyson Air Strait, and I think I've seen videos on TikTok but I don't have the patience to try. The entire reason I have this $500 blow dryer is because I have no patience!

I wanted to write this post now because if you've been thinking about getting an Air Strait, get off the fence. I promise you will not regret the purchase and with Black Friday sales in abundance, you can find it at a discount. And remember, you can always return it so if you really want to try it but are unsure, make sure you're purchasing from a store with a good return policy, like Sephora or Nordstrom

If you want to see the Dyson Air Strait in action, I included a few clips in a YouTube vlog I posted over the summer-- you can see how my hair goes from wet to dry in under 20 minutes. It's truly magical and I will never go back.

Dyson, you have my heart.
